Lawyer wins scholarship for legal English course

Bournemouth, 14 September 2007 - Kingsmore International is proud to present the first legal English student who won a prize in the form of a scholarship. This prize has been issued in association with the Tommaso Pengo Association of the University of Padova. Anna Roberta Cavazza, a 25 year old practicing lawyer from Italy has won this prize and has studied legal English with Kingsmore. As a result, we have asked Anna some questions about her stay in the United Kingdom.

Legal English prize Q) Hi Anna! Congratulations on winning this scholarship. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you from and what do you do back home?

A) I'm Anna Roberta Cavazza, born in Vicenza (Italy) 20/06/1982. I've studied Law at Padova University where I got my graduation on 13/10/2006, discussing a thesis in Comparative Criminal Law about the relationship, in federal states (especially in the USA and in Germany), between the federal and the states level regarding the power to enact criminal laws. At the moment I'm in the middle of my two year training period, so I'm currently working as a practitioner lawyer in a small law firm in my town, where I have to deal mainly with civil law matters (especially contracts, family law, remedies, liability) although I really like criminal law as well. I'm also attending a two year post-graduation course in Padova called SSPL, which is equalised to a master and recognised for the state judge exam.

Q) What can you tell us about the Tommaso Pengo association?

A) The Tommaso Pengo Association was created in Padova by the brother and friends of Tommaso, a boy of 25 who attended my same university courses, who died tragically on 15th March 2007 in a bike accident just a few days after his graduation. So, in order to keep his memory alive, the Association, among other activities, decided to allow a student of the same age as him to come to Bournemouth to attend this legal English course which he would also have liked to attend at Kingsmore.

Q) What kind of test did you have to take to compete for this prize? Was it difficult?

A) The Association chose the student among those who sent the application form together with some required documents regarding:
1.) certification about the graduation, indicating the subject of the thesis, the final result, the date in which the graduation was obtained, the professor;
2.) certification about the registration in the faculty course;
3.) certification about the exams taken and results;
4.) certification listing extra activities, e.g. sport, art, music, work, volunteering work, level of knowledge of any foreign language, abroad study/work experiences;
5.) certification of financial situation of the family (non compulsory).

Legal English studentAccording to these features the Association ranked the students and chose the winner of the prize, so no test, just application.

Q) Is this your first visit to England or have you been here before?

A) This is my third visit to England, but my first in Bournemouth.

Q) What do you think of the English culture?

A) I have to say that the English culture has always attracted me, but it's the first time for me to live with an English family.

Q) You studied legal English with us for 4 weeks. What do you think is most helpful about this course?

A) I think that the most important thing about the legal English course was the opportunity to learn the legal language connected to specific areas of law, such as remedies, company law, intellectual property law - not only by reading texts, but also by writing emails, using different registers of language, simulating negotiations, writing examples of contract clauses. In other words, using the language in its everyday contest.

Q) Are there any other aspects besides the course that you like about studying in a language school?

Legal English course winnerA) Apart from the structure of the courses themselves, I think that studying in a language school allows you to know other students from different countries with whom share your own experience, organising trips for the weekends and stay in touch also when returned home using English.

Q) Would you recommend Kingsmore to anybody who is looking to study legal English?

A) Of course! I'd recommend Kingsmore to any other law student who would like to study legal English in England, because I think the best of its features is the high-level of teaching. I think that there are few Italian students aware of the importance of learning also how to communicate efficiently in English in order to find a job.

Anna, it was a true pleasure having you with us here in Bournemouth. Thank you very much and we wish you all the best. Hopefully we can meet each other again in Italy.
